Rhodope is rich in history, having been inhabited by ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. This has left its mark in the various historical monuments and museums.
The Municipal Museum of Komotini exhibits a collection of pottery, coins, jewelry and other objects of historical and cultural significance. The Komotini Wine Festival and the Carnival are very popular events. Komotini is known for its cuisine, which features a variety of traditional Greek dishes and delicacies such as souvlaki, moussaka, and various seafood dishes.
Maroneia, city close to Komotini, was an important center of trade and commerce in ancient times, and its ruins and historical monuments can still be seen today. Its ancient theatre is still used for cultural events and performances.
